 The Dragon's Wake River Cruise

On a rainy summers day on Sunday 6th July a few members of Teme Lodge and their families (16 in all) enjoyed a great afternoon sailing down the River Severn on a River Cruise organised by the Worcester South Rotary Club.

Colin Jeffrey, who is a member of Rotary and Teme, thought the day would be a good addition to our Social Calendar of and promptly sent out letters to all members of the Lodge to inform them of the event.

I for one was very glad that he did because the event turned out to be a wonderful and refreshing occasion.

We all turned up at a very wet North Quay (It rained all morning), with our families and friends wondering if this was going to turn out to be a damp squib…

We needn’t have worried because after a pre-cruise drink in the bar, the sun came out in all its glory, and turned the River Cruise into a very enjoyable occasion indeed.

I had forgotten how beautiful and peaceful the River could be as we sailed down past the Cathedral, and took in the views of the old rowing club, the Diglis Hotel, the old trout jumps, Diglis Basin and Locks (which we had the pleasure to spend a few minutes watching the old Victorian (though now automated since 2003) technology in action.

On past the not now quite so new 'South Road Bridge', and past the junction of the River Teme (the very spot where Teme Lodge gets it’s name).

Then onwards through peaceful countryside past the village of Kempsey, where the riverbanks were occupied by inquisitive cows and horses who came down to the riverbank to marvel at the sight as we splashed through the water producing a mini Severn Bore of our own, to wash the shores on either side of the River.

It reminded me of my youth when we too would gather as they did by the side of the river, and watch the old passing steam trains - and wave at the driver and passengers, who never failed to wave back as it steamed it’s way through the countryside to who knows where.

It’s a pity more Teme members couldn’t make it because it really was a great afternoon - Thank you very much Worcester South Rotary Club and Colin for thinking of us.

We look forwad to seeing you at our next day out.
